Bright future secured for regions METS sector, similar commitment needed from the ALP

16-Nov-2017

LNP candidate for Mirani Kerry Latter, RIN General Manager Adrienne Rourke and LNP Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington, discussing plans to build Mackay’s Resources Centre of Excellence.

Following on from today’s election announcement by the LNP to commit $3.6 million to build the Mackay based Resources Centre of Excellence (RCOE), industry body, Resource Industry Network is looking for a similar commitment from the ALP to ensure this game changing piece of infrastructure is built, whatever the outcome of the upcoming election.

Resource Industry Network (RIN) Chairman, Tony Caruso said “We are very pleased that the LNP has announced this financial commitment to build this facility. It demonstrates great foresight by the LNP who understand what this centre of excellence can do for the heavy engineering and services sector, in this region. It is well known that the region is a world class provider of Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) and this centre will be the platform that will ensure our region continues to be a world leader in the METS area. The centre will be the hub that brings together research, technology development, education, training and testing, while showcasing this region on the domestic and world stage. It will be a multi-user facility for industry, universities, government and medical institutions that will facilitate collaboration and accelerate ideas to market by providing access to a realistic simulated underground mining environment.

“Furthermore, the facility will assist in educating the next generation of workers of the career opportunities and benefits of working in our METS sector. The centre would also provide tourism opportunities, giving valuable insight into what happens in Paget.”

The Australian Labour Party is a strong supporter of the METS sector with local sitting members Jim Pearce and Julianne Gilbert regularly attending RIN industry events. The ALP has repeatedly demonstrated their support for the METS sector, through significant funding of the METS Ignited program. To secure this unique facility in our region, we need the ALP to also commit to funding the facility. We look forward to seeing the ongoing commitment to our regional METS sector through this commitment.

RIN is now calling on local Labor candidates Jim Pearce, Julieanne Gilbert and Bronwyn Taha to work with their party leaders to commit to funding for this significant regional project, prior to polling day.
