Suicide Prevention Focus of Resource Industry Breakfast

15-Sep-2017
The Resource Industry Network hosted a breakfast this morning for over 130 representatives of the resources industry with the aim of encouraging workplaces to ask the potentially lifesaving question of R U OK?

R U OK? is a national initiative that encourages people in the community and workplace to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life. The RUOK? Organisation highlights four simple steps that could change a life – Ask, Listen, Encourage Action, and Check In. Their website, www.ruok.org.au, provides comprehensive inform action about how to ask someone if they are ok.

Resource Industry Network hosted a breakfast to coincide with R U OK? Day in which a raffle was conducted and donations totalling $428 was raised for R U OK? Resource Industry Network General Manager Adrienne Rourke said of the event, “it was fantastic to see the industry turn out in support of RUOK? Day”
Mrs Rourke continued “suicide prevention is of the upmost importance for our industry and we are committed to ensuring the mental health of all those employed in our sector is sustained by encouraging people to take the time to learn how to stay connected with each other. It’s really important that we all check in with employees, mates and loved ones on a regular basis”.

The breakfast also featured a presentation from Laurence Manning of local Mackay suicide prevention group Grapevine who informed the attendees of the statistics regarding suicide in our community and the steps which anyone can take in speaking to someone who is struggling emotionally. Grapevine is active in the Mackay community in addressing mental health and further information can be found on their website www.grapevinegroup.org.au.

Mr Manning also spoke about the Grapevine’s safeTALK suicide alertness training program. Information was provided about the safeTALK program that will be run in our community in the coming months. safeTALK is presented by Livingworks’ qualified trainers and provides educational and factual information that encourages suicide alertness and promotes suicide-safer communities.

Resource Industry Network would like to thank the Mackay Regional Chamber of Commerce and our wonderful sponsors for supporting us for this event.
