Desire to collaborate among key findings of METS sector report

METS businesses in the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday region are seeking to collaborate more, develop regional capability, and build export capacity among many other findings of a METS capability and supply chain mapping project.

The Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday (MIW) METS Export Hub as part of the Resource Industry Network has delivered the findings of a commissioned report that recommends promoting METS collaboration through an alliance, establishing a METS business incubator for innovation and commercialisation, and continued investigation of the future skills needs of industry.

MIW METS Export Hub manager Dean Kirkwood said yesterday’s workshop at the new Resources Centre of Excellence was attended by more than 40 representatives from the region’s METS sector, industry groups, and regional stakeholders.

“The workshop was about having a conversation around the findings and recommendations of the report prepared by Lytton Advisory.

“The report findings show that we have more than 65% of businesses earning over 80% of their income within the Bowen Basin.

“For our region to be prosperous into the future, we need to diversify into different industries, sectors, commodities and even different countries. The best way to do this will be through collaboration with other METS businesses, industry, government, and research agencies,” Mr Kirkwood said.

He added that it was fantastic to see the region’s METS businesses and stakeholders gather at the workshop and share their thoughts, so everyone can work together cohesively towards the goals of the sector, businesses, and the region.

The workshop discussed what the findings mean for the MIW METS sector and how the information will used to ensure the recommendations are embedded in the region. Facilitated by RIN director Tim Magoffin and MIW METS Export Hub manager Dean Kirkwood, the event also had contributions from Mackay Regional Council Mayor Cr Greg Williamson, Greater Whitsunday Alliance CEO Kylie Porter, Resources Centre of Excellence Chair Tony Caruso, METS Ignited general manager Ian Dover, and Lytton Advisory consultants Craig Lawrence and Gene Tunny.

A copy of the report will be released publicly next week and will be able to be viewed at the Resource Industry Network website.

The workshop was conducted with funding assistance from METS Ignited.
