3 December Representing the Region on the Global Stage | Dean’s Desk 1 December 3, 2025 By Admin RIN Dean's Desk 0 Welcome to Dean’s Desk! As we head toward the end of a busy year, I’m pleased to launch this new (hopefully) fortnightly update - a quick snapshot of the key work happening across Resource Industry Network. The goal is simple: to keep our members informed about where we’re focusing our time, how we’re advocating for the region, and the value your membership helps us deliver. The past fortnight has certainly been a busy one and makes for perfect first edition of Dean’s Desk. 1. Opening Doors in ASEAN: Skills, Services & New Partnerships I recently travelled to Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN International Forum on Trade in Services, representing our region and our world-class METS sector on the global stage. The conversations across panels and roundtables highlighted the growing demand for Australian expertise, particularly around skills pathways, sustainability practices, and professional services export opportunities. A major outcome was signing an MOU with REACH2050 to strengthen cooperation between ASEAN and Australian METS industries. This positions our region for real diversification opportunities - creating pathways for member businesses to collaborate, share capability and explore new markets. It’s early days, but the potential is huge, and it’s exciting to see our region recognised internationally for its incredible capability. 2. QRC Insights: A Clear Message for Regional Queensland I also travelled to Brisbane for the QRC State of the Sector Lunch, where I spoke about the continuing impact of Queensland’s coal royalty regime on our members. The latest economic contribution report again showed the pressure regional businesses are under, particularly here in the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday region. The figures tell a clear story: Industry spending in Mackay fell by more than $2 billion over the past 12 months. Resources sector’s contribution to local Gross Regional Product declined by $3.44 billion. More than 65,000 jobs in the region depend directly or indirectly on the resources sector - meaning surety matters more than ever. These aren’t just numbers; they reflect real impacts on local suppliers, contractors and small businesses. My message at the lunch was simple: regional businesses need stability and investment confidence to grow and employ. RIN will continue to advocate strongly on this issue on behalf of our members as we step into phase 4 of our Regions before Royalties campaign. This involves taking a delegation to Brisbane Parliament in the coming weeks with three local businesses. We have secured briefings with several key elected members to share the stories of the METS sector and the impact royalties are having on our region. 3. Charting Our 2026 Direction: Strategy in Action Last Friday our team wrapped up a full-day strategy session with Nick from Minds Aligned, working through our 2025–27 Strategy and turning it into a practical, ambitious plan for 2026. It was a great opportunity to step back, sharpen our focus, and ensure we’re prioritising the initiatives that matter most to members. With 2026 marking RIN’s 25th anniversary, there’s a real sense of momentum across the organisation. The work ahead is exciting, and our team is aligned and energised to deliver strong outcomes for our members and the region. 4. Leadership Transitions: Thank You Tim & Tamara, Welcome Glenn This fortnight we also acknowledge important changes within the RIN Board. A heartfelt thank you to outgoing Chair, Tim Magoffin, for his leadership, guidance and good humour. In my early days as GM, having someone with Tim’s experience to turn to was invaluable - even if I had to endure the dad jokes, the ongoing campaign to convince me Slade Point is Mackay’s finest suburb, and the inevitable Mackay Marina Run references in every meeting. Thank you also to Tamara Hage, who has stepped down from the Board after making a strong and meaningful contribution to RIN’s work. Her involvement to the COED Committee in particular, cannot be overstated. Both Tim and Tamara have been generous with their time, insight and support, and our organisation is better for it. We now welcome incoming Chair, Glenn Anderson, who brings deep industry experience and a strong commitment to the region. We look forward to working with Glenn as we continue delivering value and advocacy for our members. Until next time… Thanks for your continued support. The work we do is only possible because of our engaged and passionate member base, and I look forward to keeping you updated as we progress through an important year ahead.
