Winners crowned at the prestigious 2021 RIN Awards

Whether it is a unique business strategy or an out-of-the-box METS solution, some of the region’s most resourceful businesses have been recognised at the 2021 Resource Industry Network (RIN) Awards in Mackay last night.

The 2021 RIN Awards, proudly sponsored by major partner DRA Global, recognised the significant achievement and enterprise that local businesses are demonstrating across seven categories including safety, leadership, export, innovation, diversity, and community connection.

Resource Industry Network Chair David Hartigan said this year’s awards night was a huge success with more than 300 in attendance at the MECC to celebrate the people, the innovation, and the successes of the resource services sector.

Mr Hartigan said the awards recognised excellence in business and the significant contribution that those businesses make to the regional economy and community.

“This year was even more special given we were unable to host the event in 2020 due to Covid. But as a sector, we have been very fortunate to be able to continue mostly uninterrupted and help keep our region’s economy going strong,” he said.

Local METS company SMW Group were awarded for their creative thinking in delivering an innovative, remote-operated hot wash truck to the market, taking out the Out of the Box Award. The judges commented on how the company had historically demonstrated a systematic approach to ‘out of the box’ thinking to develop both a product and service that offered real solutions to industry, while diversifying its business to create a new income stream.

SMW Group’s remote-operated hot wash truck is used for industrial cleaning and delivers total elimination of proximity risk and injury risk for the operator. It also offers mobile flexibility and versatility where the truck can approach equipment almost anywhere on-site, and wash anything from solar panels to draglines.

Fitzroy Australia Resources took out the Champion Culture Award for their Team Membership Program, designed to take the best from high performance sport and apply it to leadership within the company. What resulted was transformational for the organisation with leadership programs no longer viewed as finite, but an ongoing journey about who they are and how they do business.

The judges unanimously agreed the submission was a compelling one providing a great overview of the Fitzroy culture change journey, their connection with all employees including contractors, and demonstrating belief and improvement in safety and production.

This year, the RIN Awards also included a special segment that saw 10 individuals acknowledged as part of Resource Industry Network’s 20-year anniversary.  Allan Ruming, the late Tony Britton, Peter Van Iersel, Margaret Cameron, Karen McIntyre, Narelle Pearse, Julie Boyd, Mick Crowe, Tony Caruso, and Adrienne Rourke were all recognised for their role in championing the resources supply chain in the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday region during the past two decades. Formerly known as Mackay Area Industry Network (MAIN), Resource Industry Network is also planning a 20-year anniversary celebration event in September.

The evening was made even more entertaining with keynote speaker Bernard Salt providing a thought-provoking presentation on the future of Australia, and emcee Kat Davidson adding comedy and character to the night’s proceedings.
