Manufacturing Hub Collaboration Helps CEPP Queensland Bring AR Technology into Manufacturing

A collaboration through the Manufacturing Hub and ARM Hub has helped CEPP Queensland explore new technology and improve the way it designs and manufactures products.

The connection started after CEPP Queensland attended a Manufacturing Hub presentation. Several Hub members visited the business and proposed different ideas that could support its operations. One of those ideas was the use of Augmented Reality (AR) glasses.

"At the time, it was a technology that suited a problem we were trying to solve," said CEPP Queensland. "Since then, we've found many more ways it can be used."

The AR technology complements a digital transformation journey that began six years ago when CEPP Queensland moved from manual measuring methods to advanced 3D scanning. The company now scans entire conveyor systems, creating highly detailed digital models that allow engineers to design conveyor guarding solutions with greater accuracy.

The change has transformed the way projects are completed. Previously, teams could spend up to a week on site measuring conveyors before returning to create designs and work through multiple revisions. Today, a site can be scanned in just a few hours, with all the information needed captured in a single visit.

The detailed 3D models allow CEPP Queensland to manufacture guarding systems that fit correctly the first time, even around complex cabling and unique site conditions. This reduces modifications, saves time and improves confidence for both the business and its customers.

AR glasses are now helping bridge the gap between digital designs and real-world manufacturing. Teams can load a 3D model into the headset and overlay it onto physical equipment, allowing them to visualise how components will fit before manufacturing begins.

One project involved a set of customised tanks with complex connection points that were difficult to interpret from traditional drawings. Using AR, the team overlaid the digital model onto the physical fixture, identified potential issues and made adjustments before fabrication.

"The cost of getting it wrong would have been significant," the company said. "AR gave us the confidence to get it right."

The technology is also improving collaboration. With two headsets available, team members can view the same model together, discuss challenges and solve problems before work starts on the workshop floor.

As AR technology continues to improve and meet site safety requirements, CEPP Queensland sees even more opportunities to use it across the business. The support and connections provided through the Manufacturing Hub and ARM Hub have helped the company access capabilities it would not have otherwise had and continue building on its commitment to innovation.
